Five tips on "how to photograph better if you live in a small town?"

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

Photography is a wonderful way to capture the beauty and essence of a place. When it comes to island environments, the opportunities for stunning photographs are endless. From pristine beaches and rugged cliffs to colourful sunsets and unique flora and fauna, there is no shortage of click-worthy things to grab on camera. However, photographing in an island environment can present some challenges, such as dealing with harsh sunlight, unpredictable weather, and limited resources.

In this blog, we will explore tips and techniques for capturing stunning photographs in an island setting. Whether you are a seasoned photographer or a newbie, you will find practical advice and inspiration to help you capture the magic of island life through your lens.

I live in Charlottetown, PEI and sometimes of the year the climate is amazing and these tips helped me a lot.

  1. Use Editing Software: Editing software can be a powerful tool for enhancing your photographs. Even basic editing software can allow you to adjust the brightness and contrast, crop your photos, and apply filters. Don't be afraid to experiment with different editing techniques to achieve the desired effect. The one I use is a photoshop photographer subscription, it gives you important tools for photo editing.

  2. Use Natural Light: Natural light is your best friend when it comes to photography. In the north, the quality and intensity of the light can change drastically depending on the time of year. During the winter months, the light can be very soft and diffused, while in the summer, it can be very bright and intense. Take advantage of the changing light to capture diverse moods and atmospheres in your photos.

  3. Look for Unique Places: One of the benefits of living in a small town is that you can easily find unique and scenic areas for your photography. Look for landmarks or other structures that are unique to your town. Perhaps there is a historic building, a charming main street, or a picturesque park. Explore your town with a fresh eye, and you may be surprised at what you discover. That's why I love walking and checking out the corners of the town.

  4. Experiment with Different Perspectives: Try shooting from different angles, such as getting low to the ground, or shooting from a high vantage point. This can give your photos a unique perspective and add depth and interest.

  5. Practice(a lot): The more you practice, the better you'll get at photography. Don't be frustrated if your first few attempts don't turn out as well as you'd expected. Keep practicing, and with time, you'll develop a better sight for lighting, composition, and further unique elements of photography.

In conclusion, living in a small town in the north can present some unusual challenges for photography, but with some imagination and practice, you can capture stunning photographs that showcase the beauty and essence of your town. Remember to Use Editing Software, Look for Unique Places, Experiment with Different Perspectives, use natural light, and definitely practice regularly. With these tips, you'll be on your way to taking better photographs in no time.
